ERGO Versicherung has expanded its personal accident insurance program to include a new smart and innovative feature: ERGO is now the first insurance company in Austria to offer a smart accident protection policy that includes an SOS Emergency Service and a smart bicycle helmet. For a limited time only, new customers who choose a Sicher Aktiv Plus personal accident insurance policy with a smart protection component will receive a smart cycling helmet from Livall for free – available exclusively from all ERGO tied agents.
Cycling is certainly a fun leisure-time activity, but it does pose a high risk of injury. For example, more than 8,000 people were injured in 2018 as a result of an accident involving a bicycle, e-bike or electric scooter, and in 41 cases these injuries proved to be fatal (source: accident statistics compiled by Statistics Austria). Despite these facts, only one out of every five regular cyclists and only one out of every three leisure-time cyclists wears a helmet (source: Traffic Safety Report published by the Austrian Road Safety Board – KFV). Such an attitude is pretty risky when you consider that 80 % of bicycle-related accidents occur in a leisure setting and are not covered by statutory accident insurance.
“Seconds can mean everything when someone has a bike accident that results in a head injury”, says Philipp Wassenberg, CEO of ERGO Versicherung AG. “Our product is designed to not only offer comprehensive financial security in the event of an accident; its smart accident protection feature also ensures that our customers receive help quickly in an emergency and therefore remain safe. Here, innovative digital approaches such as a smart helmet and our SOS Emergency Service make it possible for us to ensure that help arrives quickly in the event of an accident.”
Smart protection with a smart helmet
The Sicher Aktiv Plus accident insurance policy now offers even more security with smart accident protection that includes an SOS Emergency Service and a smart bicycle helmet from Livall. This highly innovative helmet is equipped with a motion sensor that can tell when a cyclist falls off the bike. If this happens, warning lights on the helmet start blinking, alerting everyone in the immediate area that an accident has occurred. If the cyclist does not move for 90 seconds following the fall, the smart helmet uses a smartphone app to send an SOS notification with GPS data to the SOS Emergency Service operated by ERGO. The Emergency Service team then attempts to contact the cyclist by phone. If the cyclist doesn’t answer the call, a rescue chain is automatically initiated. The smart helmet is innovative and reliable in a preventive sense as well. For example, when it starts getting dark, 14 lights on the back of the helmet automatically switch on in order to make the cyclist more visible to cars coming up from behind.
For a short time only, the smart cycling helmet is being offered by ERGO for free to customers who choose a new Sicher Aktiv Plus personal accident insurance policy with the smart SOS Emergency Service (annual premium: minimum € 400; minimum policy period: 36 months). The helmet is available exclusively from ERGO tied agents. This special offer will continue as long as supplies last. After that, customers who choose smart accident protection will be able to purchase the smart helmet at a reduced price.
Customised personal accident insurance
Private accident insurance offers financial protection to policyholders who have an accident in their free time. The ERGO Sicher Aktiv Plus policy can be tailored to create customised accident protection packages. Customers can choose between four basic modules (Permanent Disability, Lump-Sum Capital, Accident Pension Benefit, Accidental Death) and ten additional modules that can be purchased individually or combined in any manner.
“Our products are designed to ensure flexibility for our customers”, says Christian Noisternig, member of the ERGO Board of Management with responsibility for Sales & Marketing. “The modular system offered with ERGO personal accident insurance enables customers to protect themselves against the financial impact of an accident in a manner that suits their individual situation. As an innovative company, it goes without saying that we continuously adapt our insurance solutions to changing customer requirements. For example, our insured events classification also includes allergic reactions to insect bites, illnesses resulting from tick bites and several other types of incidents.”
The Sicher Aktiv Plus personal accident insurance policy is valid worldwide and includes a 24h SOS Emergency Service that provides rapid assistance in an emergency.
